An aesthetically-pleasing outdoor space for a family to relax in is important for a happy home. Of homeowners upgrading their outdoor spaces, about 51% spend six or more hours there per week. When you’re looking forward to spending all of your free time there, you want it to be the perfect shape. Follow these tips on your patio’s design so that you can get ready to install that patio you’ve always wanted in your backyard.

What Dictates Patio Shape?

When you are deciding on the design of your beautiful outdoor space, you actually have quite a bit of freedom. Unlike interior design, you are not restricted by walls and ceilings. The most important consideration is that the shape is well-suited to your needs and setting. If you plan to place a large rectangular table on your patio, you don’t want an asymmetrical design that won’t allow for the room you need. If you already have a pebble pool deck, you’ll want to make sure it is well-integrated with the patio. The shape should also match the style of your home and garden. For example, when your garden or home is made of straight lines, consider going with a square or rectangle.

What Are Possible Shapes?

The shape possibilities can really go as far as your imagination can, but there are some tried and true designs to which you can easily turn.

    • Square: A square patio is the most common shape choice as it is the most practical and cost-effective. This shape goes well in contemporary gardens, with its straight edges and ninety-degree angles. You can make a square patio more interesting by changing up the paving material between different areas, or creating different levels. Cut patio stones and bricks are also popular material choices for a square shape.

  • Round: A round design is almost as equally popular as a square one. This shape gives the opportunity to feature a central focal point, such as a fire pit, fountain, or even a simple circular dining table. You could choose to go with a full circle or a half circle that abuts a hardscaping surface. A round design easily blends with the surrounding landscape because of its lack of sharp angles, so it is ideal for softer garden styles. Pavers and bricks can be laid in a circular pattern, making them perfect for a round design.

Outside of these standard shapes, you could make a free-form patio. These often feature sweeping curves and unpredictable angles. If you have an oddly shaped backyard, this organic style may suit you best. No matter which shape you decide on, you’re sure to spend many wonderful hours in your home’s new gathering space.
